Romeo & Juliet, love at first sight?

In the previous video it was shown a school project about love at first sight. In the video the speaker said that there was significant scientific evidence that proved that this is possible. At the end she remembers the story of Romeo & Juliet as an example of this.

In my humble opinion, this is not true. Romeo did not fell in love with Juliet when he saw her for the first time.
Nowadays love at first sight does not exist, some can argue that back in Elizabethan times this was possibly, but I’m sorry I can’t imagine anyone so superficial to say he/she is in love with someone just for its appearance. Let’s remember that Romeo & Juliet’s love is a true love, not a superficial one.

What happened then? When/Why did they fall in love?

To me, when Romeo saw Juliet simply saw someone more handsome than Rosaline, someone who called his attention. This is why he was perplexed, but the thing is that the more he looked at her, the more fascinated he was, and then Romeo wanted to know who she was and what was going with her.
I don’t think it was love at first sight, but love somehow began there. I think that Romeo’s first impression of Juliet made him want to talk to her, and by talking love was born. In my opinion, Romeo was delighted and surprised by everything Juliet said. So now it was not only her appearance, but also her personality. As the play goes by, love increases.
In the balcony scene, the two lovers have the chance to speak alone, and every word they utter fascinates the other. Their love keeps confirming every time they speak.

As you see, Romeo & Juliet did not fell in love right away, but their meeting served as a base for love to begin.
What do you think? Do you think it was love at first sight? Do you think love at first sight is possible? Have you ever fell in love with someone by just looking at him/her?

  2. It is hard for me to believe that feelings such as "love at first sight" are still alluded to nowadays--personally, I have never experienced this feeling; however, in this play, it is rather evident, in my own conceit, that Romeo and Juliet indeed lived this sensation at the moment they first saw each other, given that Romeo's feelings towards Rosaline became overshadowed by the presence of Juliet.
Romeo stated that he was in love with Rosaline, yet he totally forgot about her when he met Juliet. What he felt for her must be love; otherwise, he would have kept his feelings for Rosaline. This means that his feelings for Juliet were true and, therefore, stronger. If what he felt for Juliet was not love at first sight... what was it then?

  3. That is a really hard question to answer since I have never experienced true love at first sight. I think that it is impossible to love someone without knowing them. In this sense, when Romeo first heard Juliet's voice--as a way of consolidation of his love for her--could be understood as an external factor to take into consideration when falling in love with someone: it's not just the looks.
Now, to answer your question, Romeo was just in love with the idea of being in love with such a creature that was so different from others, that just took his breath away. Romeo (and Juliet as well) was just playing the role of being on love rather than loving, at least during the first time he saw her.
